Northland Pt 1 - Bay of Islands & the far north
After Tongariro, I booted it north past Auckland to Northland. One of the most popular tourist destinations in this region is the Bay of Islands. I stayed a couple nights in Paihia and did the obligatory dolphin cruise during which I saw a very large pod of bottlenose dolphins. I have officially given up on trying to get pictures of these dolphin jerks. They are just not photo-friendly.
After leaving Paihia, I went to the north tip of the north island, Cape Reinga. There is a famous lighthouse there and it is the northern end of 90 Mile Beach, and is also home to giant sand dunes. It was a great day trip.
