This country is just what I needed. I have just been to Muang Ngoi Neua for a couple nights. It involved taking a tuk tuk bus (pickup with frame around it) 3 hours north to Nong Khiaw, then taking a boat 90 minutes north up the Nam Ou river. At the end of the trip I was rewarded with a village that is on a quiet river, no roads and surrounded by beautiful hills. It was fantastic. The icing on the cake was that my room cost me a whopping $2US per night, and yes, beer is still cold and still $1US for a 600mL bottle. Wow.
